This recipe was inspired by my Gruffalo mad toddler. It is a great recipe to get toddlers involved . It’s super easy and quick to do. My son had a great time baking these, he couldn’t wait for them to be ready! The smell of the biscuits when they are baking, is just divine!

The recipe is very versatile, you can adapt the recipe with any flavours you like. I used cocoa powder in this recipe to get the chocolate flavour I liked. You can add chocolate chips, raisins, nuts, pretty much anything you like!

If you don’t wish the make the Gruffalo claws and feet, you can use a cookie cutter to cut out the shape you like.

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes

  • Cooking time: 15 minutes

  • Total Time: 30 minutes

  • Serves: 16 biscuits

  • 56g caster sugar

  • 170g plain flour

  • 113g butter (softened)

  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder

  • 1 tsp vanilla essence

  • Flaked almonds

  1. Cream the butter and the sugar until pale.
  2. Sift in the flour and the cocoa powder. Add in the vanilla essence.
  3. Use your hands to mix the flour and knead until mixture becomes thick and forms a ball. If you find your mixture is a little dry, you can add a splash of milk.
  4. You can use the dough straight away, but I found it easier to let it firm a little in the fridge , so it was easier for my son to roll and pat out. I left it in the fridge covered for 10 minutes.
  5. Make small balls from the dough (as many as you can get) and use the palms of your hands to flatten the ball. Use the sides of your hands to form an oval like shape.
  6. Use the flaked almonds as claws at the front of your biscuit. Place on baking tray with a baking sheet underneath.
  7. Bake at 180 degrees Celsius (fan or 200 for conventional ovens) for 15 minutes.
  8. They should not be crumbly or soft. You should be able to pick them up once baked.
  9. Once cooked, place on cooling rack and allow to cool for 15 minutes.

These biscuits can be enjoyed anytime. You can never be to old for chocolate biscuit!

You don’t need anything with these biscuits. They are delicious by themselves
